After an extensive audition in New Hampshire in October, Isaiah Silvia-Chandley, 18, of Souhegan High School in Amherst; Andrea Sarasin, 18, of Nashua High School South; and Margaret Schofield, 18, and Rebecca Vasques, 18, both of Milford High School, were accepted to the Greater Los Angeles-based nonprofit school beginning in the fall. The Young Americans, founded in 1962 by Milton C. Anderson, is credited as the first show choir in America, mixing choreography with choral singing. Each year at its College of the Performing Arts, the organization provides approximately 250 talented 17- to 23-year-olds from across the United States and the world with education in music, dance, performance and teaching methods.

The three-day workshops the group hosts are designed to stimulate growth in self-confidence, teamwork and understanding audiences around the world. As part of its International Music Education Tours for second year and beyond students, The Young Americans participate in national and international tours.

“Being chosen to perform with The Young Americans is a dream for these four dancers, a culmination of so many years of hard work and dedication that continues to pay off in big ways,” Blake said. “They’ll continue to grow as dancers and performers as they share their spirit and talent for people around the world. We’re so proud of them and excited for the many opportunities to come.”

Silvia-Chandley, Sarasin, Schofield and Vasques have all travelled to Dance Excellence twice in the past four years and participated in the Young Americans Outreach Workshop held at Milford High School.

Since 1988, Kathy Blake Dance Studios has participated in Dance Excellence in Los Angeles, a weeklong, invitation-only workshop hosted by The Young Americans. Blake is nationally known for her 100-plus dance instructional videos, “Let’s Learn How to Dance.” She and her daughter, Suzanne Blake Gerety, are co-founders of DanceStudioOwner.com, a collaborative online membership community and resource for studio owners worldwide. They are regular columnists for Dance Teacher Magazine’s “Ask the Experts” column.
